The National Birth, Marriage and Death Indexes record the Registration District in which an event occurred rather than the individual town or village. The Wycombe district for example, stretches from Stokenchurch in the West to Wooburn Green in the East and from Marlow and Medmenham in the South to Wendover in the North. Events occurring in Gerrards Cross may be shown under Eton whilst Amersham events, for some time, were recorded under Beaconsfield.
Some events have been registered in districts which cannot be found on a map but have been created for administrative purposes. For instance, Ploughley covers the villages surrounding Bicester but not Bicester itself. Bullingdon covers an area of Oxfordshire including Dorchester on Thames and Watlington.
Individual towns and villages have sometimes been moved from one district to another and districts themselves may have been renamed from time to time. At present, the Registers for most of the places mentioned in the Family Tree are divided between Chiltern Hills, Aylesbury Vale and Oxfordshire districts. Where individual towns and villages are known they have been shown, otherwise districts are given the name they held at the time the event was recorded.
The Indexes show the quarter in which an event was registered. This means that precise dates are not shown for everything. If there was any delay in registration then the period shown may be a later one than that in which the event occurred. Where a birth occurs close to a year end it may be recorded in the following year thus making the person appear one year younger.
