Although the name Lord was recorded as far back as the 12th Century, the earliest member of the family traced to date is Samuel Lord who is thought to have been born around 1710. He is believed to have been illegitimate so tracing his father may prove impossible. We know however that he married a Sarah Beedle and that, in 1734, the couple had a son who was also named Samuel.
Samuel junior grew up and married Mary Bridge and, in 1758, Mary gave birth to William Lord. In due course, William married Mary Heard who had at least nine children, one of whom was John Lord. He was born c1789 in the Essex village of Heybridge, just the other side of the River Blackwater from Maldon.
On 19th July 1815 John married Anne Pettit, a 29 year old widower with no children. They subsequently had four children, one girl and three boys. The eldest was Ann born c1820. The first of the boys was Isaac born in 1821. The second was father’s namesake John born in 1824. He was followed in 1828 by Henry.
Anne died in Maldon in 1838 aged 52. John, an agricultural labourer, remained a widower until his death in Maldon in early 1859 aged 69.
As yet little is known about their daughter Ann. In the 1841 census there is no record of her in Essex and the only Ann Lord of her age to be found was living in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire and working as a milliner. We do know however, that she died of TB in Woodham Mortimer in 1850 aged only 30. (Woodham Mortimer is a village just west of Maldon).
